The Collaborative’s membership comprises higher education institutions (HEIs) from Africa. There are three categories of membership within The Education Collaborative.
Open Network
This membership category is open to individuals, associations, organizations, and other non-HEIs who engage with the Collaborative through a series of activities, workshops, and programs targeted at helping meet their institutional goals. Learn More

Open Network
This membership category is open to individuals, associations, organizations, and other non-HEIs who engage with the Collaborative through a series of activities, workshops, and programs targeted at helping meet their institutional goals
Associate Membership
This level of membership allows institutions who are deeply engaged but are unable to fulfil all membership conditions to have access to the pool of resources in the network, sometimes at a fee, to drive internal innovation mandates or strategic initiatives.

The Open Network
Through the Open Network, participating institutions and members engage with one another through a series of activities, workshops, and programs targeted at helping meet their institutional goals.
Communities of Practice
Communities of Practice (CoP) are workgroups of educators, administrators, experts, and other stakeholders in Africa’s higher education sector. CoP workgroups leverage members’ collective competencies to deliver practical, transformative solutions within their campuses and organizations.
June Convening
Our June Convening is the central platform for all stakeholders in African higher-ed to share innovative resources and strategies for the advancement of the sector. Held biennially in June at Accra, the week-long event harnesses the collective expertise of institutions and educators on ways to create an educational system that supports Africa’s development agenda.
Learning Hub
The Learning Hub is a learning management system that offers curated and practical proven techniques in teaching, learning, and administration from Ashesi University and member institutions in Africa. Courses are structured to support self-paced learning and are available on subscription upon registration with The Education Collaborative.
Member Consortium
Member institutions at this level are our partners for transformation. They commit to share their exemplar expertise in teaching, management, and leadership and engage their peers in country and continent to deepen learning and scale transformation. Consortium members contribute to The Collaborative’s strategy development by serving on regional hubs, co-organizing convenings, serving as hub hosts, or on hub host due-diligence committees. They also shape programs, and contribute to reviewing new member applications to join the consortium. Most importantly, consortium members drive impact and evidence by leading special projects under our focal initiatives. They engage their peers, regulators, experts, and industry to start, scale, or replicate new models for transformation. Consortium membership is institutional and is governed by member regulations. Members commit to annual self and peer evaluations, and to meeting fundamental requirements of tracking graduate employability rates and submitting to the sub-Saharan Africa University Ranking.
Contributing consortium institutions in The Education Collaborative annually review progress, activities and commit to ALL of the following:
- Contribute their expertise and experience in building exemplary systems that have achieved sustained quality outcomes and impact. The contributing institution will share faculty, administrators and other resources to mentor, consult, and support peer institutions to improve quality and develop exemplar systems and structures. The Education Collaborative supports institutions to build the capacity to contribute this expertise with peers on the continent.
- Benefit from other institutions’ contributed expertise and experience in building exemplary systems that have achieved sustained quality outcomes and impact. The contributing institution reviews its existing system and receives support, consultations, or mentorship from peer institutions to bridge gaps in its systems for better outcomes.
- Building sustainability through the development, sharing, and growth of resources for the higher education sector in Africa. The contributing institution engages in and is recognized as a contributor in the regional hub in their home region. And in one or more of the following:
a. Contribute to a community of practice
b. Develop and share resources on the EduCollab virtual resource hub.
c. Share and facilitate sessions at annual convenings and workshops.
d. Increased number of staff/faculty/leaders engaged annually
Member institutions in good standing of membership and showing evidence of expertise in focus areas can be classified Lead institutions. Lead institutions are Exemplar in the focus areas of expertise and can engage in the Education Collaborative in a contractual capacity not limited to the following: Focal initiative lead or co-lead; Co-organizer in annual June convening; Grant committee member; Hub host; Hub host due diligence committee member; Hub representative to Consulting committee.

Becoming an Associate Member
This category of membership is specifically for individuals in the Education Collaborative network who have been actively engaged with or without their institution’s commitment. Individuals in this category are expected to:
- Be engaged with a higher-education stakeholder in Africa.
- Dedicated engagement in key activities throughout the year.
- Contributes to sharing, learning, and scaling outcomes.
- Full commitment to at least one community of practice.
Becoming an associate member is an opportunity for institutions that cannot fulfill all requirements of consortium membership but commit to engaging deeply and directly with the Collaborative. Associate member institutions benefit from the following:
- Associate Member gets access to the pool of resources and funding to engage in conferences, workshops, and trainings both regionally and continent-wide.
- Access to grants to pilot proof of concepts and projects for systems to improve student outcomes.
- Attend conferences, workshops, and convenings, and access the virtual resources platform at a discounted rate.
- Opportunity for faculty, administrators, and executives to lead sessions and share in knowledge-sharing platforms like conferences and workshops.
- Recognition by world-leading higher-ed funders as contributors to the transformation of higher-ed on the continent.
- Opportunity to lead and drive innovation in communities of practice.
