This session will explore a pedagogical approach to ethics education developed at the Allan Gray Centre for Leadership Ethics (Department of Philosophy, Rhodes University, South Africa). Participants will learn the extent to which ethics is about learning to see what is right in front of them and, relatedly, learning to act in consistent ways with lucidity. Doing this is part of what educational theorists such as Bell hooks, Paulo Freire, Richard Rorty, and John Dewey thought of as the practice of freedom. Personal freedom is an achievement that demands that we take responsibility for our lives. Responsible living and freedom are inseparable dimensions of ethical life.
