OnStage Session: Using evidence to improve employability for young people in sub-Saharan Africa

June 15, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm

Topic: Using evidence to improve employability for young people in sub-Saharan Africa

Facilitators: Dr. Jennifer N. Udeh, Head of Programmes and Partnership, ESSA; Dr. Samuel Asare, Research Manager, ESSA

Synopsis: Participants will learn about how Education sub-Sharan Africa (ESSA) is joining up employers, universities and colleges across sub-Saharan Africa, to use evidence-based approaches to help young people get jobs. This includes a project with the Education Collaborative to develop a guide for universities and colleges on improving career development for students and developing employability measurement frameworks. During the session evidence on youth employability will be shared, which has been gathered from stakeholder consultations in Ghana and ESSA’s African Education Research Database (AERD); a platform created in partnership with The REAL Centre at the University of Cambridge.

By the end of the session, participants will have:

  1. Learned what research by African scholars says on how universities contribute to building young people’s skills for employment.
  2. Contributed knowledge and expertise to the development of research on improving employability for young people in SSA.
  3. Identified opportunities to engage and collaborate with ESSA and the Education Collaborative in ongoing research.
