The Burkina Institute of Technology (BIT) is more than just an educational institution—it is a driving force for change, equipping young people with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to shape the future of Burkina Faso. While BIT offers programs in computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and artificial intelligence, one of its most impactful initiatives is its commitment to empowering young women.

A Commitment to Women’s Empowerment
In many parts of the world, and especially in Burkina Faso, young women still face barriers to accessing education and career opportunities. Recognizing this challenge, BIT launched the Women Empowerment Initiative four years ago—a program designed not only to increase female participation in higher education but to create a supportive environment where women can thrive.

Through weekly specialized sessions, BIT equips female students with the tools they need to succeed—focusing on soft skills, leadership development, career growth, and work-life balance. These topics, often overlooked in traditional academics, are essential in helping young women build confidence and take ownership of their futures.

For Bouda Mouniratou, BIT’s commitment to empowering women was a defining factor in her decision to enroll:
“When I learned that BIT was founded by a woman, it motivated me to achieve great things.”

A Network of Mentorship and Role Models
One of the hallmarks of the Women Empowerment Initiative is its speaker series, which invites professionals from diverse fields—including STEM, business, and even sports—to share their experiences. These sessions give female students real-world insights into overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities. By engaging both male and female speakers, BIT fosters a well-rounded, inclusive dialogue on gender equality and leadership.

In a recent virtual session, Susanne Pertl, Founder and President of Burkina Institute of Technology, shared powerful advice with the students, urging them to “dream big, stay passionate, and persevere through challenges.” Reflecting on the interaction, Susanne noted, “I was inspired by their courage, thoughtful questions, and drive to create change.”

For many students, BIT provides more than an education—it offers a sense of belonging and a vision for the future.

Traore Ramatou, a current student, reflects on this:
“I want to thank BIT for giving me a safe place to learn and a perspective for the future.”

Similarly, Zongo Wend-mi Aïda Isidora recognizes the efforts BIT has made to create opportunities for young women:
“The university made a big effort for girls, and therefore I will give my best to make BIT proud of us.”

Building a Future Beyond the Classroom
Burkina Institute of Technology’s commitment to women’s empowerment extends beyond graduation. The institution nurtures a strong alumni network, ensuring that former students continue to mentor and uplift each other. This cycle of empowerment and giving back strengthens both individuals and the broader professional community.

For students like N’do Olivia Astrid, the impact of BIT is not just personal—it is national:
“I want to become an entrepreneur to participate in the development of Burkina Faso.”

Similarly, Badolo Patricia sees her education as an opportunity to inspire others:
“I want to become a role model to others and prove that others cannot tell you what you can and cannot do.”

Impact and Vision for the Future
BIT’s efforts to champion gender equality in education have led to remarkable results. Today, nearly 40% of BIT’s student body is female, with a vision to reach 50% in the coming years. Over 300 young women have participated in the Women Empowerment Initiative. Additionally, BIT maintains a remarkable 100% employability rate among its overall graduates, with many students—including women from the initiative—securing internships and jobs at leading international companies.

Beyond BIT’s campus, the institution actively engages with high schools, encouraging young girls to consider careers in STEM, business, and leadership. By challenging societal norms and providing a strong support system, BIT is changing mindsets and redefining possibilities for women in Burkina Faso.

Shaping the Next Generation of Leaders
BIT’s impact goes beyond academic degrees—it is fostering a new generation of female leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers. Through its commitment to creating a supportive and empowering environment, BIT is ensuring that young women not only enter male-dominated fields but also thrive and lead in them.

BIT’s model proves that when women are given the tools, mentorship, and opportunities to succeed, they don’t just change their own lives—they transform their communities and their country.
